Day 5- Good Evening from Kayunga!!!! Wow what a day! I would have done this earlier but we were at breakfast at 7:30am, and havent stopped since. We arrived at Tender Mercies around 9. Not all of us had the same task. Some had meetings, some organized and set up stations, and some of us played a soccer, football, volleyball combo with the kids in the court yard, where LITERALLY 4 balls were flying from all different directions like gym class for ADD people. I’m a fit 45 year old woman, but was red and sweating my butt off, chasing around the balls, while playing keep away, and praying secretly that I didn't trip and have to go to a foreign country ER for a gym-class sports injury. ***Hence the importance of the travel insurance!!!
Exciting news…TODAY WAS SHOPPING DAY!!!! Yay! Those 27 totes were filled to the brim from all our GENEROUS donors. We had new play shoes, new school shoes, and they each got to pick out some shirts, shorts/pants, socks, undies, jammies, a towel, and a hygiene kit. I was taking pictures of the kids before they entered so we could track their growth and share with donors. We also make sure everything was distributed fairly, so each kid got lined out with the necessities. It was so heart felt to see their before “forced smiles,” replaced with HUGE “authentic” beaming ones, after they got to pick out their new digs. I can personally relate to the excitement when I get new clothes, ESPECIALLY ones I Iove! Thank you so much for all who donated! They were of incredible quality and even trendy!!! These kids were ecstatic and super thankful. Without you WE wouldn’t be this successful!
This afternoon we arrived back at the hotel at 4:30. We were greeted by the chef and asked what we wanted for dinner. We ordered bbq chicken, chips (fries), veggies, and samosas (triangular meat and veggie stuffed pastries). Chef asked what time we’d like it, and Tom replied “7? Does that work?” Chef replied 7:30, and we agreed. I was silently confused why it would take 3 full hours to prepare dinner, and Tom joked out load “they properly have to butcher it.” Later when they presented the meal, Tom joked that his chicken was still running. I belly giggled like a 10 year old child when I picked up my piece and saw a stretched out black charred chicken leg in SPRINTING position. So next time you make your chicken dinner, be grateful that all you had to do is grab the frozen Costco bag out of the freezer, defrost in the microwave, and toss it on the grill.
PS- There is a storm going on right now where the power is turning off and on, and off and on, again and again. At least 9 times now in the last 10-20 minutes, and one or two times before. Once again reminding us to appreciate the things we have, like reliable electricity.
PSS- I’m a first time blogger, so the blue and black mixed writing above is actually unintentional. I just havent figured out yet how to make it stop, haha. Have a wonderful day and remember God loves you! We appreciate you all!!! Stay tuned for more fun tomorrow!
