Day 7-
Good evening from Kayunga! Another great day! We met for breakfast at 8, and discussed the game plan for the day. Now that we have most of the kids through the shopping station, it’s on to new activities! The team had some awesome ideas! Our focus is to help direct these kids towards a brighter future by getting to know them better, encouraging each child to do well in school, get clearer goals, be enthusiastic and supportive, and to help them find the right tools. Some of the team met individually with older kids and asked them about themselves, what their dreams may be, and what’s on their heart. Funny how important it is to simply ASK. Most people are so willing to tell you, and excited someone wants to listen. Especially these kids who share one father, and a handful of adult staff. I spent most of the day playing soccer with the kids, painting one teen girls nails bright pink (which looked fabulous on her dark skin), and printing out flash card type pages to teach the kids the sign language alphabet. This way they can learn to speak better with their def sister at Tender Mercies. The printer was not great, only printing about 50% of the picture, so I had to use a black sharpy and a live hand model to help me sketch the full image. Some of the kids joined in so I had a few models to choose from. They’re always eager to engage and join in. For the record, you can’t just run to Walmart and get a new printer, or more ink. Kayunga is a big town, but remote and rather primal. The city is hours away, where you find variety and quality, etc. Here in Uganda you just do the best you can with what you have, and be thankful you have it! Have a glorious week! Talk to you tomorrow!
