AIDSPIRIT- TRAVEL TEAM

Good evening from Kayunga!!!

Day 9 of travel-

A day of melted hearts….

I had no idea today would impact me the way that it did, and I wasn’t the only one. Today was the eye clinic, where the towns people could come and get their eyes checked/fitted for reading glasses. Imagine not being able to see well enough to read letters on a page, to sew, to write. Imagine not having the money to buy them. We can go to the dollar store and buy reading glasses for $1.25, yet these people cannot afford this small critical accessory that they consider a luxury. We arrived at Tender Mercies at around 9am, with a good 30 towns people waiting patiently for us to open. So excited and grateful to receive this free gift. Charles introduced us individually and explained how the process would work. They would first start with an individual one-on-one with a local Tender Mercies kid, having them read the same sentence on a piece of paper, printed in different fonts, which indicated which number glasses, or script, they received. Their helper would write down the number and direct them to our tables, where they could try on and choose their pair. Seeing them LIGHT UP with gratitude and joy, when they could read the lines was magical. We then removed the outer manufacturing sticker, showed them how to clean the glasses, and handed them their new pair. A million thank you’s from our happy customers who walked away with pride. A street sweepers woman (who chose bubble gum pink), a hospital lab technician, a teacher, and even the chairman of Tender Mercies, were some of our local quests. They just kept coming…ALL DAY LONG! Some of us only stopped for 10 minutes for lunch, just long enough to fill our plate and go back to the table where we continued to help! “Some of these folks could very well have walked 5 miles just to get here,” Tom told us later. I love perspective, it makes me feel so grateful for what we have, and makes me want to give my extras. I once saw a boy in Kenya who wore only one flip flop. When my Mom asked “where’s your other shoe?” He said, “ I has one shoe, my brotha has one.” They SHARED A PAIR OF FLIP FLOPS? Can you image?? I don’t wanna tell you how many pairs of shoes I have, it feels like a dirty little secret now, lol. Yet these people have SO MUCH JOY, such deep deep gratitude for the little they have. I’m signing off early so I can get some sleep. It’s torture trying to fight the WiFi here, so I’ve been at this for hours. We appreciate all who are following our adventure, who have donated clothes, shoes, glasses, money, etc, etc. We appreciate your prayers. No pressure, but If you can spare $25, the link is below. We love you, and God loves you! Have a blessed day!
